Tool selection and use in CNC machining

2025-02-10

In CNC machining, the selection and use of cutting tools significantly impact machining quality and efficiency. Tool selection should be based on the machining material, type, and requirements. Common tool materials include high-speed steel (HSS), carbide, and ceramics. High-speed steel tools are suitable for general machining, while carbide tools are ideal for high-speed machining and hard material machining.

The geometric shape of the tool is also a crucial factor affecting machining performance. Common tool geometries include rake angle, relief angle, main cutting edge angle, and auxiliary cutting edge angle. The rake angle influences the cutting force and chip formation, while the relief angle affects the tool's wear resistance and cutting stability. The main and auxiliary cutting edge angles influence the distribution of cutting forces and the quality of the machined surface.

When using tools, attention should be paid to tool installation and adjustment. The tool should be correctly mounted on the tool holder, ensuring that the tool's centerline aligns with the machine tool's spindle centerline. Additionally, cutting parameters (such as cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut) should be set appropriately based on the machining material and tool type to avoid tool wear and machining defects.
